BOTANICAL T ESTING

Comprehensive Botanical Testing

We offer analysis of plant tissues for identification purposes, including routine tree root identification for subsidence claims. Our specialists used advanced DNA analytical techniques to provide robust and accurate results. We can offer one-off identification or sustained volumes of repeat work.

Plant and Tree Identification Using DNA Analysis

SML Laboratories provides commercial DNA‑based identification of tree roots, delivering highly accurate results for the insurance and subsidence sectors. Our DNA barcoding methods outperform traditional microscopic assessment by reliably identifying root material to genus and, in many cases, species level. This technique is particularly effective for specimens that are difficult to distinguish manually – such as poplars, willows, and other closely related species — as well as fine juvenile roots and samples lacking bark or other diagnostic features.

We undertake both one‑off investigations and high‑volume, routine testing for insurers, loss adjusters, and structural engineers.

We are currently expanding our capabilities to include DNA fingerprinting for matching roots to potential parent plants (e.g., comparing root material to nearby leaf or twig samples). This service is expected to launch shortly.

Other Environmental DNA Applications

Our DNA barcoding methods can also be applied to a wide range of biological materials, including:

  • Leaves, twigs, and other plant material
  • Fungi and moulds
  • Selected materials such as feathers and the like.

Our specialists can advise on bespoke analyses, and we are experienced in designing customised testing programmes to meet the needs of environmental consultants, insurers, ecologists, and regulatory‑focused organisations.

In parallel, we are developing an extended range of commercial DNA sequencing services, supporting applications in:

  • Food forensics
  • Agriculture and crop supply chains
  • Environmental management
  • Regulatory compliance
  • Horticulture and plant trading

These services will support clients who require accurate species identification, contaminant detection, or supply‑chain validation. Please check back for updates as these new services go live.
